“Extreme” was a good description for the 2006 Saleen S281E. Starting with the mid-level Saleen SC (supercharged) model, the top-of-the-line S281 Extreme not only added more boost, but it also came with a strengthened 4.6L 3-valve V-8 engine. This Tungsten Silver S281E, Serial No. 06-0129, has been driven only 29,335 miles. The supercharged Saleen Mustang is equipped with the Tremec 6-speed manual transmission, 3.55:1 gears, Dark Charcoal interior and the optional tinted scenic-glass roof panel, a precursor to the Mustang’s optional glass roof. Saleen 20-inch 7-spoke alloy wheels. At Saleen’s Southern California production facility, technicians replaced the Mustang’s factory 4.6L powerplant with an engine updated with a forged-steel crankshaft, forged-steel rods and forged-aluminum pistons. Topped by a Saleen Series IV integrated twin-screw supercharger with dual-stage water-to-air intercooler, the modified engine developed 550 HP with help from a performance inlet tube and air box, high-flow air filter and Saleen Powerflash calibration. By 2006, the Saleen Mustang looked right at home with the Porches and Ferraris at the local “Cars and Coffee,” thanks to Steve Saleen’s excellent eye for design. Although definitely a Mustang, the Saleen stood apart with its unique front and rear treatment, along with the special aero package with distinctive front splitter, rear diffuser and rear-quarter window treatment for the Extreme. Saleen’s Racecraft suspension improved handling with N2 struts and shocks, specially calibrated coilover springs and larger front and rear stabilizer bars. Inside, Saleen added leather sport seats, a 200 MPH speedometer, Saleen driving pedals with foot brace, and a close-ratio shifter. A one-of-one with its combination of colors and options as dictated by the Saleen Registry, this Saleen S281 Extreme is well documented with its Saleen invoice and letter of verification.
